Berchtold Holzschuher was born in Nuremberg and became its mayor in 1551.

Circular medallion of Berchtold Holtzschuher (1511-1582); hone-stone; carved with bust to left; below: ornamental frame; design in relief; inscribed.

This object was collected by Anselm von Rothschild and bequeathed to the British Museum by Ferdinand Anselm Rothschild.

9.4 cm wide, 10.2 cm high, 1.4 cm deep, and it weighs 85g

Detailed Curatorial Notes

Provenance: Baron Anselm von Rothschild, Vienna, by 1866 (cat. no. 354).

Commentary: Berchtold Holzschuher was born in Nuremberg and became its mayor in 1551. In the following year he resigned from office and was devoted to the exploitation of its silver and copper mine to Stollhofen in Styria. The monogram 'M.S.' occurs on several other known pieces. They are almost certainly the work of a Nuremberg artist.
